MishMash Sheffield - 'Kitchen Café Bar' - Restaurant Review

MishMash on Sheffield's Ecclesall Rd is aptly named for its ecclectic menu and quirky but cool decor. I ate there last Friday night and enjoyed it enough to write a mini review of them here.

First of all, it's a not an S&M Cafe-esque 'posh bangers and mash' place as we'd initially thought on hearing the name. MishMash, the name, applies much more to the general feel of the place with chunky wooden furniture, bold ceiling-high prints of the Peaks on the walls, and a bright but informal style.

Although placing an emphasis on locally sourced food, the menu is far from traditional with interesting flavour combinations galore. Choosing between wood pigeon with green bean salad, salmon cured in vodka and beetroot with guacamole and caviar, or goats cheese and red pepper muffins was challenge enough for the starter, and the main courses were equally delicious sounding. I enjoyed the salmon then roast venison with bitter dark chocolate sauce for mains and was very satisfied. Desserts weren't quite as exciting sounding, but we were full enough to just opt for coffee by that point.

I was pleased to see that locally sourced also applies to the drinks menu with Kelham Island's range of bitters along side the usual international lagers and decent sounding wines.

Overall, I really enjoyed the food and ambience of MishMash. The combinations in decor and flavours were indeed a mish mash, but a mish mash to great effect. Pricing was not bad for the quality at £16 for two courses or £20 for three. All said, I'd very much recommend heading down to Hunters Bar and checking them out.
